Camp Lighthouse
Camp lighthouse started in 2000 to seek out those children unable to attend a day camp due to lack of transportation and inability to pay. The camp experience is structured to seek a healthy development of mind, body, and spirit through diverse activities, caring adults, and dedicated counselors. Children come to camp light house free of charge. Bus transportation is provided from the neighborhood also. The children who attend this camp receive a hot lunch as well as breakfast and an afternoon snack.
Camp Activities
- Campers are grouped by age into six "family" groups
- Campers rotate through active structured daily sessions: educational and entertaining.
- Each daily program has arts and crafts, computer skills, indoor or outdoor games, dance, and ceramics.

Nourish 2 Learn
Nourish2Learn is in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and the Savannah Chatham County Public School System. Through Nourish2Learn the Society has been providing hot meals for students in after school programs at Hodge Elementary and Gadsden Elementary school. In addition to our after school initiate, Martin de Porres has been providing nutritious mid-morning snacks to several area elementary and middle schools, including: Gadsden Elementary, Hodge Elementary, Bartow Elementary, Thunderbolt Elementary, Islands Elementary, and Shuman Middle School. For the past two summers, we have provided meals and or snacks to students attending summer school at Spencer and Thunderbolt Elementary school. Most of our schools are Title 1 schools which serve economically disadvantaged high percentage reduced/free lunch communities. These activities are important to us because we have as a fundamental philosophy, the belief that a hungry child can not learn.
Nourish2Learn has been in effect at Hodge and Gadsden for at least 5 years. It has been a successful venture. Over this time period test scores at these schools have steadily improved along with attendance in the after school tutorials. We feel that serving the hot meals has been a direct influence on positive. Check out the video below about Nourish 2 Learn.
